Unlocking Potential: The Power of "Strange" Interview Questions

Unlocking Potential: The Power of "Strange" Interview Questions

In the battle for top talent, CVs only tell half the story. The average interview is based on a standard script—but how do you truly differentiate between qualified candidates who look identical on paper?

The secret? The intentional curveball.

By introducing an obscure question, such as "How many light bulbs do you think there are on this floor?", you create an opportunity for candidates to shine outside the traditional boundaries of the interview process. I've been trying this in recent interviews for searches I have been running and the results have been really interesting!

What do these questions reveal?

  • Logic and Creativity: They expose a candidate's innate ability to apply logic and demonstrate creativity when faced with the unexpected.

  • Pressure Handling: They test how a candidate operates under mild pressure, a crucial insight into their real-world performance.

  • Cultural Alignment: They signal to candidates that your company is curious and values thinking on your feet.

A word of caution: You can't be strange for the sake of it.

If you’re ready to add this to your assessment toolkit, remember to think before you ask:

  1. What kind of thought process are you testing (mathematical, abstract, lateral)?

  2. Does the question reflect your brand values? It will be one of the most memorable parts of their interview experience!

  3. Have you tested the question internally? Different answers can reveal innovative problem-solvers who might be your next great hire.

Are you already using curveball questions in your interviews?
